â€Å"The fight that is life† is the common theme represented in all three of the following poems, â€Å"Do not go gentle into that good night† by Dylan Thomas, â€Å"I know why the caged bird sings† by Maya Angelou and â€Å"Invictus† by William Ernest Henley. This essay will analyze these three poems in detail to find similarities and differences between them. The three aforementioned poems seem to have more differences than similarities between them. Such as in â€Å"I know why the caged bird sings,† which is about a bird that longs for a better life, whereas in â€Å"Invictus† which brings forth the idea of the author being â€Å"the master of his fate.† The poem â€Å"Do not go gentle into that good night† is about never giving up on living; the poem â€Å"Invictus† is about giving life his best shot. Royal Court Theatre Essay Although the title of the play was called Rhinoceros, I did not initially believe it would be about rhinoceroses. Instead I believed that the word rhinoceros was a mere hidden meaning which would be revealed later on in the play and yet to my surprise the play was about rhinoceroses. Even more intriguing was that people were transforming into rhinoceroses. This gave me a wider range of aspects to look at regarding lighting, sound, staging etc To begin with the staging it was in a shape of a simple square and no staging curtains were covering it. The side walls were painted white to keep the staging simple and not to distract the audience from the performers. With the walls painted white there was no need to emphasis the scene change by using added back drops to change location of the scene. The far back wall was made up of joint wooden planks which would slowly fall gradually through the performance. This was first shown when the very first rhinoceros appeared to the performers. A sound which gradually became louder in the background, the performers would look to the side of the stage where smoke would appear, this symbolising where the rhinoceros was charging from, causing a couple of wooden planks to fall off. This was the intended effect of a Rhinoceros charging through the town square, causing the walls to shake. Everytime this happened more and more planks would fall off and by the final scene of the whole performance, the wall had almost completely collapsed. These planks were also never touched or moved, even during the interval. There wasnt obvious interaction between the audience and the actors, apart from when the rhinoceros would charge through the town square. The  rhinoceroses were never seen by the audience until near to the end. What symbolised a rhinoceros charging through the square was a distant but very rapidly approaching sound of the breathing and head log dash of wild animals as well as a trumpeting sound, gradually becoming so loud that the actors cannot be heard. By this time the sounds become extremely loud with rapid sounds of powerful animal galloping very close by. These sounds felt as if some were made by a group of people making the animal trumpeting sounds, however the galloping was probably produced by instruments to get the full effect the play needed. Smoke would also appear where the rhinoceros appears to be running and the performers would stare in horror at that particular point of the stage. To create illusion of the rhinoceros charging, it has to move to various points around the stage or in this case the theatre, where the audience is sitting. This is where the interaction of the audience begins. For the illusion of the rhinoceros charging through the audience, smoke isnt used to show that the rhinoceros is actually within the audience as it does when on stage, but the animal galloping, trumpeting sound increasing with the help of surround sound to emphasis to the audience that the rhinoceros was there with them, and also the performers looking into the audience as if they were the rhinoceros or it was charging through them. There wasnt much colour used through the performance; however there were elements of it used, whether it was clothing or the staging itself. The staging walls were painted white to emphasis that there is not individual. With the walls painted this colour, this also meant that the audience also had to use their imagination to create the scene location. The characters  costumes didnt create much individually, apart from Daisy and Berenger who stood out from the other characters. Daisy wore a bright yellow dress throughout most of the performance. The other female characters wore darker floral dresses, this gives the impression that she has more of a positive attitude compared to the other characters and this choice of colour for her dress was made because of that. MacBeth Attitude Changes Essay In the tragic drama Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare in 1606 during the English Renaissance, the hero, Macbeth, constantly declines in his level of morality until his death at the end of the play. Because of his change of character from good to evil, Macbeths attitude towards other characters, specifically Duncan, Banquo, Lady Macbeth, and the witches, is significantly affected. The first of the four characters is Duncan. Since Macbeth interacts with Duncan only a minimal amount before Duncans death,Macbeths attitude towards him changes very rapidly. Before Macbeth hears the witches first prophecy, he is very close to Duncan, and would never even think of doing something against him. When the thought of murdering Duncan crosses his mind immediately after he finds that he has just been named Thane of Cawdor, he cannot believe he yield to that suggestion / Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair / And make my seated heart knock at my ribs (I, iii, 133-35). In scene 5 of act 1, however, his vaulting ambition is starting to take over, but partly because of his wifes persuasion. He agrees that they must catch the nearest way (17), and kill Duncan that night. (I, vii, 13-16)When Lady Macbeth enters, though, she uses her cunning rhetoric and pursuasion techniques to convince Macbeth that this is, beyond the shadow of a doubt, the right thing to do. He then tells her that I am settled. (79). He is firmly seated in his beliefs that killing Duncan is the right thing to do-until he performs the murder. He is so horrified by this act that for a moment he forgets where he is or whom he is with. We learn from this murder that Macbeth truly had faith in the king and was very loyal, but under the forces of his wifes persuasion and his own vaulting ambition, he is put in the evil frame of mind for just long enough to kill Duncan. This murder does permanently alter him from his moral state of mind, however, and he soon does not feel much remorse for murdering Duncan. The Second of the four characters towards whom Macbeths attitude changes is Banquo. Before he murders Duncan, Macbeth is a very close friend to Banquo, and they are almost always together. After the murder, however, Macbeth senses suspicion on Banquos part. He realizes that Banquos wisdom that doth guide his valour / To act in safety (52-53) will cause Banquo to want to turn Macbeth in for his crime. Macbeth knows he must also get rid of Banquo since, according to the prophecy, the throne will pass to Banquos sons otherwise. He feels so little towards her that when he is informed that she has just died, he remarks that She should have died hereafter (17 ), meaning that she would have died anyway. His loss of feeling towards his wife most likely iscaused by his distraction and present state of mind. Had his mind been calm and relaxed, not distracted by anything, he probably would have reacted to this news with more feeling. However, his whole personality has changed, and perhaps death does not faze him any more because he has committed five murders since the beginning of the play. The way Macbeth acts toward the three witches changes significantly as the play progresses. In act one, scene five, Macbethtells his wife in his letter to her that the witches have more in them than mortal knowledge.
